Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by taking action for voting rights on this Day of Service? ? ? ? Dear friend,
As we honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy with a Day of Service today, we are all moved to observe his example of making our communities more equitable.
With 34 new anti-democratic voting restrictions taking effect in at least 19 states this year ? many targeting BIPOC communities for disenfranchisement ? we must do everything possible to safeguard our democracy and the right to vote. That's why the U.S. Senate must do whatever is necessary to pass pro-democracy legislation now.
By honoring Dr. King's legacy, we can build people-powered grassroots pressure to demand legislation that will realize the promise of democracy for all of us ? no matter our race, zip code, or income ? so that we all have an equal say in the decisions that shape our daily lives and futures.
Today, on this day of service, use your voice to help stop these racist attacks on democracy by coming together and demanding the Senate reform the Senate rules and in order to pass vital pro-democracy bills. Demand now that your Senators protect voting and civil rights nationwide to build a more equitable America for us all [link removed].
? ? TAKE ACTION NOW: TELL THE SENATE TO ACT TO PROTECT OUR DEMOCRACY
A healthy, functioning democracy where all people can participate freely and equitably is necessary to address climate change, protect our communities, and deliver environmental justice. But in 2021, at least 19 states passed laws that restrict the freedom to vote, undermine fair voting districts, and raise the likelihood of future attempts to sabotage fair elections ? and more could go into effect this year if we don't act now.

Low-income communities and communities of color have consistently and systematically been excluded from the political process, resulting in decades of environmental racism and a shameful lack of accountability for anti-environment politicians and polluting corporations.
Communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis across the country must have their access to the ballot box protected by the rule of law.
Dr. King was a tireless advocate for racial equality and just and equal representation, and we honor his legacy by continuing to do whatever is necessary to pass to pass pro-democracy legislation like the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, and the Protecting our Democracy Act now.
These bills would include provisions to:Protect and expand the right to vote including expanding access to early voting and voting by mailRespond to overt voter suppression including restoring federal voting rights to formerly incarcerated citizensCurb gerrymandering and reform redistricting to ensure a fair and just processProtect against voter intimidation Tell the Senate today they must reform the Senate rules and vote to pass pro-democracy bills ? Black and Brown communities are more heavily impacted by toxic pollution and climate change ? when they are prevented from voting, they are denied the constitutional right to make their voices heard when demanding bold climate action.
The stakes of this crisis couldn't be higher for our freedom, our future, and the health and safety of our communities. We need to transform our political system into one that works for all of us. LCV stands with leaders fighting for democratic representation, racial equity, and environmental justice, continuing the legacy left by Dr. King.
Thank you for speaking out for our democracy.
