Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a man who changed our country by fighting for racial equity and inclusion.

Over the past year, we’ve seen just how fragile our democracy is. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us that our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter — we will always stand up for what’s right, and our fight for racial equity and progress will continue.

That’s why today is one of the busiest days of the legislative session. The legislature stays open on MLK Day to hear from people across the state advocating for themselves, their communities, and overall progress. Some of today’s discussions will be about protecting voting rights and the right to choose, combating climate change, and so much more.

We’re thrilled to have community organizations and nonprofits speak to our senators about Washingtonians' most pressing matters, and for everyone’s safety, we’ll be meeting virtually.

Democracy is strongest when everyone participates. We’re proud to have you in our continued fight for equity, inclusion and progress. We hope you spend the rest of today honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.
