John,
Dr. Martin Luther King challenged us to fully live up to the democratic values our country was founded upon.
He maintained an unshakeable faith in this country and its people: that we could rise above hate to form a "beloved community" rooted in equality and justice for all.
While the right to vote fairly and freely should not be a partisan issue, we are currently witnessing the most aggressive wave of voter restrictions in decades.
Access to the ballot box has been carefully and strategically stripped away for political gain, not only dishonoring the memory and legacy of Dr. King, but violating the constitutional rights of thousands.
The Freedom To Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act would defend the fundamental right to participate in our democracy.
That is why on Martin Luther King Day, I urge our lawmakers to honor the sacrifices and bravery of Dr. King, Congressman John Lewis, and so many others who made tremendous strides for our democracy with the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Now, It's up to us to defend their progress.
Will you join me in urging the Senate to PASS these desperately-need pieces of legislation?
It is my hope that, in the midst of conflict, we carry the legacy of Dr. King forward -- inspired by his words and actions to strive for a more perfect union.
Thank you,
— Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot
