Hi Friend,

I’m Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and it’s been my honor to represent Texas’ 18th Congressional District and the great city of Houston for 27 years.

Four years of our former, disgraced President and his lies sent shockwaves across our nation. All across the country, and especially here in Texas, we’ve seen Republican legislators push through some of the most egregious voter suppression legislation in decades. This year, celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. has new meaning as we’ve emboldened our fight in Congress to protect the voting rights of all Americans.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a visionary: he saw clearly what a just, equal America could look like, and spent his life working to make that vision a reality. For my entire political career, Dr. King has been a north star. A guiding light reminding me what I’m fighting for: peace, community, social justice, and an equal opportunity for all. Today, we celebrate the legacy of the Civil Rights movement, and all those who have carried the fight for racial justice forward.

Last summer, Texas Democrats fought back by breaking quorum and joining our work here on Capitol Hill to secure federal voting rights protections. And with their help, House Democrats passed the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, putting us one step closer to ensuring that Black and Brown Americans have an equal voice in our democracy.

The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act must pass the Senate. We cannot allow Senate Republicans to hide behind the filibuster. We must insist that our voices, messages, and peaceful marching matters. Until federal legislation passes the Senate and is signed into law by the President, our work is far from over. We won’t rest until every American has an equal opportunity to make their voice heard.

The best way we can honor the legacy of Dr. King is by bringing renewed energy to a fight that will fully realize the promise of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a historic piece of legislation that Dr. King fought so hard to secure. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I hope his gospel of love and unity continues to resonate in the hearts of every American and every Texan seeking to create a more perfect union for generations to follow.

We must overcome, and we shall overcome.

Kind regards,

Sheila Jackson Lee
Congresswoman, Texas’ 18th District
