John, today, we honor the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his commitment to justice, nonviolent resistance, and civil rights.
Now more than ever, it’s important to speak the truth about King’s life, without sanitizing his objectives. We’re witnessing the same white supremacist tactics Dr. King fought against as we see violent white supremacist insurrectionists attack the U.S. Capitol, widespread voter suppression and the decay of our democracy in favor of the white elite – all while our Senate stalls on the voting rights legislation we need to combat these very attacks.
In the words of Martin Luther King III, Dr. King’s son, there can be “no celebration without legislation.” That’s why we’re asking you to call your Senator and demand they pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
This legislation is just the first step. But, we know this is our best chance to fight back against the Jim Crow tactics that are already being weaponized ahead of the midterm elections.
The Freedom to Vote Act will protect our elections from voter suppression, Republican obstruction in our elections, gerrymandering, and dark money by:
Expanding opportunities to vote, including making Election Day a legal public holiday,
Preventing election sabotage, including enhanced protections of ballots and records,
Stopping voter suppression, including restoring federal voting rights to formerly incarcerated peoples,
Reforming campaign finance, including a check on dark money from infiltrating our elections,
And more.
A multiracial democracy that ensures the social, economic, and political rights of all in the United States requires that our Senate pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
John, don’t let white supremacy win. Fight for the Freedom to Vote Act.
In solidarity,
Team Sunrise
