On this day, we honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
He dedicated his life to bringing this country forward to a brighter, more equitable future. Today, we’re encouraged to follow his example and step up to serve our communities.
However, with voting rights under attack in this country, we can’t celebrate this day in good faith without standing up for our democracy. The filibuster is an obsolete relic of the Jim Crow era that Republicans are using to block critical legislation that would make voting safe and accessible ahead of the midterm elections.
In tribute to Dr. King, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has introduced a plan to streamline the passage of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. This new bill combines key provisions of previous voting rights legislation that would create national standards to ensure we can safely, freely, and equally cast our ballots, as well as unequivocally strike down deliberate barriers to voting that target voters of color.
Tomorrow, all 50 Senate Democrats must find the courage, as Dr. King did, to fight for our fundamental right to vote. They must exercise their majority, bypass the filibuster, and pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. We have momentum on our side, but all 50 Senate Democrats must unify and act fast.

This holiday comes a week after President Biden finally endorsed Senate rules reforms to fight back against relentless Republican obstruction. This could be a turning point in our efforts to safeguard the right to vote and make the promise of democracy real for us all -- if Senate Democrats act.
