John,
In his speech given at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King spoke of the feeling of standing under the symbolic shadow of Abraham Lincoln and the duty we have to fight for the promises of America.
Today, we stand under the great shadow of Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy and remember his life, his fight, and the work that is still ahead of us.
Through his unwavering resolve, Dr. King was able to make great strides in the fight for civil rights, including being a key figure in the fight to get the Voting Rights Act of 1965 signed into law. This legislation made the vote possible for thousands of people across America and it has stood for decades as the symbol of justice and equality.
But today, right-wing politicians across the country are fighting to undo this legacy. Last year, Republicans introduced over 400 voter suppression bills in state legislatures across the nation.
If we cease to fight for the promises of democracy, we could undo the work of great men like Dr. King and turn the clock of progress backwards. I promise to continue fighting for our voting rights today and every day, John. That's why last week, I voted to advance the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. But now, we desperately need the Senate to act.
If we want truly free and fair elections in America, we need to protect the right to vote. On Martin Luther King Jr. day, will you join me in demanding that the Senate take action?
