John, Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of an incredible civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Throughout his life, Dr. King championed justice and equality regardless of race, including and perhaps especially at the ballot box. His courageous leadership and the Civil Rights Movement helped us pass the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the most comprehensive voting rights legislation in the modern era. But that progress is now in jeopardy. Across the country, Republican legislators have quickly worked to suppress votes among communities of color through legislation that not only makes it harder for people to vote, but also makes it less likely their votes are properly counted. Through false, dangerous, and repeatedly debunked claims of voter fraud, these legislators are upending decades of voting rights advancements and attacking the basic promise of political equality for all. The solution now sits before the US Senate – the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. However, as long as the filibuster rules remain unchanged, we risk reverting to a voting landscape like that of the Jim Crow era. Call your Senators at (202) 224-3121 or (202) 224-3091 (TTY) and urge them to pass this critical voting rights measure by any means necessary. Dr. King’s legacy remains just as critical today as it was five decades ago. As his son, Martin Luther King III, recently stated: “MLK Day has always been a day on, not off. When we call for ‘no celebration without legislation,’ we’re not urging Americans not to honor this day — we’re asking people to honor Dr. King through action to protect the right to vote. We’re directly calling on Congress not to pay lip service to my father’s ideals without doing the very thing that would protect his legacy: pass voting rights legislation.” Honor Dr. King by calling your Senators at (202) 224-3121 or (202) 224-3091 (TTY). Tell them to eliminate the filibuster to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. Thanks for all you do, John Bonifaz President, Free Speech For People |
