Team,
Today, we commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Through his tireless work, Dr. King forced our country to confront painful truths about injustice and inequality. This struggle persists today, as Black Americans and people of color continue to face hatred and systemic racism – in housing, employment, the criminal justice system, voter suppression efforts, and more.
In a time of rising racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and white nationalism, it is our responsibility to find in ourselves his courage and continually find ways to protect and build on his legacy, today and every day.
These issues are especially salient as we work to pass meaningful and much-needed voting rights legislation to strengthen and protect our democracy. I was proud to work shoulder to shoulder with my colleagues in the House last week to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, to ensure that all Americans have an equal voice in our democracy.
May Dr. King’s work inspire us all to continue fighting for his vision of social, racial, and economic justice for all.
In solidarity,
Sara |
