Today, as we commemorate, reflect, and honor the ultimate justice-seeker and movement leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this quote feels especially poignant.
Dr. King was an organizer, mobilizer, and intentional catalyst for change, who led with love while building a movement to advance civil justice and expand and protect voting rights.
And yet, Republicans continue to use the Jim Crow filibuster to block urgently-needed voting rights legislation, time and time again — with the audacity to quote Dr. King while actively endeavoring to sabotage his life’s work.
We cannot allow obstructionists in the minority to use the language of bipartisanship and compromise to withhold power from the people. Bipartisanship is not the goal. The goal is justice.
Let’s make it plain: Dr. King’s work is far from over.
Right now, what we're witnessing is a precise, intentional, and coordinated assault on our sacred right to vote, and disdain for our democracy from Republicans and corporate interests seeking to disenfranchise Black and Brown folx, who turned out in historic numbers this past cycle.
We must expand, protect, and strengthen voting rights to ensure that every person’s voice is heard. That means ending the Jim Crow filibuster so we can pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, and other meaningful policies that address the crises our communities are facing. If you agree, please add your name now.
I am not letting up in this fight. Together, we’ll follow the blueprint of Dr. King and Coretta Scott King, continuing to organize, mobilize, advocate, and legislate like our democracy depends on it — because it does.
