We must defend voting rights.

John —

Today, folks around the block are celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day through acts of service. If you're in a position to give back — I encourage you to do so. You can check here for opportunities to take part.

We are celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy at a time when our country is at a crossroads. On one side, lawmakers are abusing their power and passing legislation that makes it harder for citizens — especially Black and brown people — to vote. On the other, we are fighting to restore voting rights our ancestors fought for and put our nation back on a path toward racial equity in voting.

The right to vote is sacred, John. It is the foundation of all other legal rights in America. Dr. King said, "to deny a person the right to exercise his political freedom at the polls is no less a dastardly act as to deny a Christian the right to petition God in prayer."

Today needs to be a call to action. 2021 was one of the worst years for voting rights in a generation. To honor Dr. King's legacy, we all must pick up the mantle and keep marching toward a democracy that works for all — not just the wealthy few and the powerful.

It was also Dr. King who said, "If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward." I remain committed to doing the work of fighting for social and economic justice because I know when we the people fight for change — we win. It's the honor of a lifetime to join you on the front lines in the battle for equality and justice for all.

We march on.

In solidarity,

Dwight
