Today, the words of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. still ring in our minds and hearts. His enduring legacy will never be forgotten as he dared to dream of a better world for everyone, one in which the color of your skin or your income does not determine your future. 

But when we honor Dr. King, we can’t only let it be by citing his words and nothing else. We must honor him by continuing his legacy and fighting for the values he believed in.

In Georgia, voter suppression laws are ushering an unfortunate new era of Jim Crow in the twenty-first century. 

We also face rising costs of living in Georgia, yet little is being done by our leaders to put money in the hands of working-class families instead of the rich and powerful.

And today, we still face systemic issues in our justice system and across our community that disproportionately affect communities of color. 

All these issues were challenges Dr. King fought against. He and other civil rights leaders have worked too hard for too long for all our progress to be undone. 

If we don’t act now on voting rights, on economic justice, and on racial justice, things will only get worse. So as we honor Dr. King today, let us be reminded that we still have work to do and that to honor him, we must continue his fight.
