# [#] John, today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and I am taking some time today to honor and reflect upon the legacy that Dr. King left on our nation.
Right now, we unfortunately face many obstacles when it comes to achieving the America that Dr. King envisioned. The right to vote is under attack across our nation, disproportionately impacting our country’s Black and Brown communities. Currently, there are bills that could protect voting rights stalled in the U.S. Senate, which is unacceptable.
If we want to honor Dr. King’s legacy, we cannot allow voting rights to be stripped away. Voting is the foundation of our democracy, and there can be no true justice in our country if any eligible voter is denied access to the polls.
On this Martin Luther King Day, let us renew our commitment to rising above the divisions in this country and striving towards the America of Dr. King’s dreams.
Sincerely,
Councilmember Derek Green
