Martin Luther King quote: “Give us the ballot and we will transform the salient misdeeds of bloodthirsty mobs into the calculated good deeds of orderly citizens.”

Dr. King’s legacy is one that inspires a burning passion for equality. The contributions and sacrifices he made to the movement for civil rights are the reason why so many continue to fight to uplift human dignity.

Now, as the representative of America’s Civil Rights District, my duty to uphold the legacy of freedom fighters like Dr. King is more important than ever.

Right now, the fight to protect voting rights is raging in Congress. As more and more vulnerable communities face legal obstacles to get to the voting booth, it is critical that we uphold the values that Dr. King fought for. I commit myself to standing for the rights and dignity of my fellow citizens and call on each of you to do the same.

I hope that the values Dr. King fought for continue to inspire future generations of Americans in their fight for justice.

Today, we pause and reflect on an incredible life. Tomorrow, we continue to stand up for what is right.
