Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. needs no introduction. 

He was a champion for racial justice, a human rights leader, and an unwavering advocate for non-violent resistance. And while he made a massive impact on our country in an incredibly short time, there’s more work to be done to realize his vision for an equitable, fair, and free America.

King was one of the leading advocates for legislation to protect the right to vote for Black Americans. Ultimately, his advocacy laid the groundwork to pass The Voting Rights Act of 1965, which abolished literacy tests and poll taxes designed to disenfranchise voters of color. 

But today, the achievements of civil rights leaders like Dr. King are in jeopardy: Inspired by Trump’s Big Lie and voter fraud conspiracies, more than 400 bills aimed at restricting voting access have been introduced in GOP-led legislatures over the past year. These bills could make it harder for millions of Americans – particularly Black folks and people of color – to cast their ballots in the upcoming midterm elections.

The future of our democracy is at stake: That’s why NewDems endorsed and unanimously voted to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act through the House – a bill that would restore the full protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and outlaw racially discriminatory voting practices. Today, we continue to call on the Senate to do the same.
