Dear John:

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a day where we observe The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, and do what we can to be of service. How can you be of service today? Check out our Advocacy section below to take action, today, on the critical need to protect voting rights. Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock of Georgia eloquently said, "You cannot remember Dr. King's life and dismember his legacy at the same time. The Senate must act now to protect the sacred right to vote.”

We agree. So read on, and consider taking action, urgently, today.

MLK Day of Service

So many PFLAGers are of service to their communities, every single day. On last week's episode of Something to Talk About Live, we talked with a few of them to learn more about how they serve, and how volunteering is meaningful for them. Be sure to check it out.

Ready to give back, the PFLAG way? Check out PFLAG Gives Back, a great resource for PFLAG members and supporters to give back, whether with a chapter or on their own. With great ways to be of service all year long, PFLAG Gives Back offers gives helpful suggestions--many of which can be done while practicing safe COVID practices.

Three Steps to Being a Better Voting Rights Advocate

Voting rights are on the line, and it’s time for all hands on deck. Here are a few ways to be a better voting rights advocate:

  1. Learn: Learn about the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and some of the best ways to talk about the bill’s importance. Read up on the Freedom To Vote Act to learn about the reforms that it, alongside the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, could accomplish as the Senate considers passing both bills jointly as the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. Check the impact issue by issue, state by state, in the Movement Advancement Project’s Democracy Maps.
  2. Watch: Check out this video from NowThis to learn more about the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Revisit this episode of Something To Talk About Live! that discusses how trans people face voter disenfranchisement.
  3. Share: Join PFLAG and contact your Congressmembers to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, or to thank them if they are already pledging to support the bill’s passage.

Advocacy

Take Action Now: Let's pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act now!

Whatever our background or zip code, in America we value the freedom to have a say in decisions that impact our lives — from curbing the pandemic to creating jobs to making health care affordable. Congress passed the Voting Rights Act in 1965 to protect our freedom to vote and ensure that attempts to discriminate against voters are formally reviewed. But now, some politicians have endangered our lives and our elections, passing anti-voter bills and refusing to pass laws the majority of Americans favor.

This is a turning point for our nation. Our Senate leaders must work to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act, which joins together in one bill the PFLAG National-endorsed Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to create national standards to ensure that we can safely and freely cast our ballots, ensure that trusted local election officials count every vote, and prevent partisan politicians from sabotaging the results of our elections.

Visit pflag.org/CommunityJustice to learn more about what's at stake, and to take action with your Senators, today. For democracy to work for all of us, it must include us all!

Something to Talk About...Live!

This National Hugging Day (January 21) Hug Your Trans And Nonbinary Loved Ones Tight

Transgender and nonbinary youth are at heightened risk for anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Parental support and affirmation helps to mitigate those risks.

This Thursday, January 20th, join us live at 4:30pm ET/1:30pm PT for Something to Talk about Live! to discuss Kerry Breen's article on TODAY.com, “What parents can learn from 'Sex and the City' sequel talk about gender identity.”

We are excited to host our very special guests, Laura and Jane Noury, whose story is currently featured in the Amazon Prime docuseries Always Jane.

You can watch live on FacebookYouTubeLinkedIn, or Twitter.
