John,
Throughout our country’s history, Americans have protested, marched, and even sacrificed their lives in the struggle to cast their ballot and fight for more people to have their freedom to vote honored.
However, in states across the country, Republican lawmakers and dark money groups are hard at work attacking our freedom to vote, using partisan gerrymandering to draw congressional districts that deny people fair representation, and planning to attempt future election sabotage. In 2021 alone, 34 laws in 19 different states were enacted that restrict access to the ballot box.1
The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will ensure that voters can safely and freely cast their ballots, protect against election sabotage, stop partisan gerrymandering, and limit the influence of dark money in politics so that billionaires can’t buy elections.
The Senate must pass voting rights protections immediately―and update the filibuster to allow this critical legislation to pass with a simple majority vote. On this MLK Day, can you send a message directly to your senators, demanding they act? Click here to take action today!
TAKE ACTION
Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), an opponent of changes to the Senate filibuster rule, has called for a public debate on any changes to the filibuster―which requires a 60 vote majority in the Senate to pass most legislation. Tomorrow, the Senate will debate and vote on voting rights legislation, including debate on restricting the filibuster’s stranglehold on voting rights legislation.
We cannot be silent as a minority of lawmakers use an arcane Senate loophole to silence the voices of Black and brown voters.
Send a message directly to your senators and demand they pass critical voting rights legislation―and update the filibuster to do so.
Thank you for taking action today in defense of the future of our democracy.
