Team,

Today, I’m taking a moment to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his everlasting legacy.

After the events of the past few years, our nation would do well to remember the teachings of Dr. King: protecting the right to vote for all Americans, and Black Americans in particular, is a critical tool in the pursuit of equality and justice for all.

Fifty-four years after the assassination of Dr. King, the struggle for voting rights continues, and the tenets of his teachings still face opposition in the form of the Republican party. As Congress considers legislation to protect and expand the voting rights of all Americans, I can think of no better way to honor Dr. King than passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.

I hope you will join me today in honor Dr. King’s legacy and that you, too, will take up the cause of protecting Americans’ right to vote in the coming days.

Thank you,

David Cicilline
