Dear John,
Today we celebrate and remember Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King’s movement to fight for racial justice and equality helped institute real change in our country. And although we have made progress, there remains so much work still to be done.
Nearly 60 years ago, Dr. King led thousands of people to protest and remove barriers to voting. And, because of his leadership and these protests, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law in 1965. Unfortunately, voting rights and access to voting are under attack again. The fight is far from over.
As we honor Dr. King’s legacy and those who marched with him, we must continue to fight for justice, equality, and peace through our daily actions. As Dr. King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
Together, we must continue Dr. King’s legacy. We must be ever vigilant and unyielding in our work for justice and equality.
Sincerely,
Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr.
