[link removed] [[link removed]]Dear John,
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day . As we collectively honor the monumental legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his unwavering commitment to racial, economic, and social justice, we are taking the lead of King Family members in commemorating this day with a call to all to fight for the future of our democracy, as they declare: “no celebration without legislation.”
Join us in doing your part to help pass essential federal voting rights legislation – the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – being considered by Congress right now. The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would help us take steps forward to achieving a truly representative and fair democracy for all. The Freedom to Vote Act includes widely popular provisions, such as mail-in voting and no-excuse absentee voting. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore and strengthen the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Members of the King Family say it best in their recent letter:
“In March 1965, my father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. asked, 'how long' must we wait for justice? Despite the difficulty of the moment, he responded, 'not long,' reminding us that 'the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.' In the more than 55 years since, my family’s fight has been anchored by this understanding as we have dedicated our lives to honoring Dr. King’s legacy of peace, justice, and equity.
Attacks on our democracy are only increasing, including January 6th and the rash of Republican voter suppression attempts across the country. We haven’t seen such a coordinated attack on voting rights since Jim Crow.
…That’s why, this Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend, Arndrea, Yolanda, and I are encouraging advocates across the country to honor my father’s legacy with action.
We invite you to … demand our elected officials pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This year, help us declare, “No celebration without legislation.”
In 2022, we should not have to march to restore the fundamental rights that my father and other activists secured in the 1960s. Your voice and actions are critical to delivering voting rights and we hope you will be able to join us in our advocacy.
Sincerely,
Martin Luther King, III — Arndrea Waters King — Yolanda Renee King”
It’s past time to pass vital voting rights legislation at the federal level.
Senate Republicans have stopped the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and Freedom to Vote Act – and other bills that would advance voting rights and protect our democracy – from passing with a simple majority vote, due to the existing rules. Sen. Angus King has already publicly shared his commitment [[link removed]] to strengthening our democracy by passing these two bills. Senator Susan Collins has not. Today, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., will you join us in asking Sen. Collins to vote to reform the Senate rules, protect voting rights for all, and pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement and Freedom to Vote Acts?
Call Sen. Collins and share that it’s time to reform the rules and protect our voting rights by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and Freedom to Vote Acts: (202) 224-2523
Thank you for honoring Dr. King with action today,
Will
