People For Member, Everything is on the line this week in the fight to save our democracy. The Senate is poised to begin debate on Tuesday on the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act – breaking through a months-long Republican blockade that has prevented debate or a vote on any legislation that would strengthen the right to vote. Despite some public setbacks, there are ongoing discussions taking place behind the scenes that could see this bill across the finish line, so we need you to help keep up the pressure on the Senate to do the right thing. Once you've had a chance to sign, please forward this email to all your progressive friends and family and urge them to do the same! Thank you! ----[previous message]---- People For Member, Ever since this president and Congress took office, and the Far Right accelerated their torrent of racist, Jim Crow-esque voter suppression and election subversion legislation in the states, we've fought tooth-and-nail to save our democracy by passing two desperately needed voting rights bills – the Freedom to Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Well, our entire democracy campaign is coming to a climax this week, as the House passed a combined bill – the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act – last week and sent it to the Senate, where Democrats will use it to try to break the filibuster as the obstacle to passage and finally enact these necessary, democracy-strengthening reforms! You've signed petitions, called your senators, contributed money, phone banked voters in key target states like West Virginia and Arizona, attended rallies, and volunteered in so many ways. Now, it's absolutely crucial that senators hear from all of us that they must NOT choose keeping the filibuster over the survival of our democracy and the right to vote. President Biden is taking the rare step of addressing the Senate Democratic caucus in person last week, to make the case that they change the filibuster rule or create a carveout to pass these voting rights protections. This comes after months of intensifying calls – from an effort People For led, with your support – for the Biden administration to go all-in on voting rights and make these democracy bills a top priority. In a forceful speech this week on the fight to safeguard our democracy from far-right extremist attacks, President Biden put it as plainly as possible to the American people:
So, while we’re thrilled that President Biden is now putting the full weight and influence of his office into this fight – something we've said for months was needed in order to finally move these bills – we know that pressure on the Senate MUST be increased if these bills have any chance to pass and be enacted in time for the midterm election. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has pledged to vote on measures that would reform the filibuster on Wednesday, to set the stage for votes on these historic measures that have been blocked by months of Republican obstruction. Thanks as always for all that you do and for standing beside us in this fight. -- Zach, People For the American Way
