An ugly part of campaigns is “call time” – a.k.a. “dialing for dollars.” Candidates like me are expected to make an ungodly number of phone calls across the state and country to ask people for contributions to help run their campaigns.
As a doctor (not a politician), I had no idea this was a thing until I started running! And I have to say, it can be an exhausting and demoralizing process.
Folks are struggling right now. They’re tired, stressed out, distrusting, strapped for cash, busy at work, expecting a different call, or in a zoom meeting. Some are sick with COVID or facing a cancer diagnosis.
Recently, I spoke with a frontline health care worker who described life during COVID, and his fatigue and stress. He was too worried about his student loan debt to donate. An elderly lady said she could donate in January after she paid for her prescriptions.
These struggles are real – and this process has really made me think: How can we elect leaders to fight for them when the 1% write fat checks to candidates who will maintain the status quo? How can candidates who represent REAL people win?
The answer is a robust, people-powered grassroots campaign that represents regular folks organizing for political change. Just ask Bernie or AOC…it’s possible for outsiders to win when we come together to back them.
