A community stops a massive refinery

A developer has abandoned plans to build a methanol refinery in Kalama, Washington, after activists and Earthjustice lawyers came together for a six-year opposition campaign and a nail-biting legal battle. The proposed refinery was set to become one of the top climate polluters in the state. This latest win marks the 11th time in a decade that a fossil fuel export project has surfaced in the Northwest, faced public backlash and legal challenges, and eventually died. Finally, a crackdown on coal ash pollution

Coal ash is the leading source of water contamination in the United States. For the first time, the federal government is enforcing rules that require the coal industry to manage toxic coal ash waste. The EPA’s rejection of utilities’ attempts to delay the closure and cleanup of toxic coal ash ponds is a vital step in the effort to protect communities from coal ash pollution.
