8 November 2019 | Full Fact election update

We're three days into the election.

Already voters have been targeted with bad information from all sides of the campaign. But already we've acted to spot and call out misleading claims. As a Full Fact subscriber, we'll be sending you the information you need to follow the campaign and make an informed vote come 12 December.

We also want to make sure others benefit. Our new media partnerships including with Sky News, the Evening Standard, talkRADIO and LBC (which you can read about below) mean that the work we’re doing throughout the campaign will be reached by millions more people.

We’re not the only ones looking to fact check this election. This week we’ve published an election fact checking guide, based on our latest research, to help journalists inform their readers and fight bad information.

We knew this election was uniquely vulnerable. Since I contacted you last week, we've been flooded with offers to help, donations, and kind words. Thanks to this support, we're now more prepared than ever to spot false and misleading claims.

The team and I are incredibly grateful.

Until next week,

Will

P.S. You can continue to help us fight for integrity of this election.

IN THE NEWS

Tune in

We’re working with Sky News to put out a Campaign Check every afternoon with Ed Conway. This week we’ve covered issues ranging from police recruitment to infrastructure investment.

For those of you in London, check out the Evening Standard on your commute home. We’re in the paper every day with a new fact check from the campaign trail.

On Wednesday our editor Tom Phillips joined Eamonn Holmes on talkRADIO. We’ll be on the show every Monday during the election.

Tune into Eddie Mair on LBC this evening at 5.40pm. Every Friday I’ll be on the show to recap on the events and claims of the last five days.

This week our work has also been featured in the Times, Guardian, Mirror and BBC News. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for coverage as and when it happens.

FACT CHECKS

Conservatives' edited footage of Keir Starmer

The Conservative party posted edited footage of Keir Starmer being interviewed on Good Morning Britain on their social media channels. In the edited version, it appears he was unable to respond to Piers Morgan’s question on Labour’s ability to get a good deal from the EU. Actually, Mr Starmer replied immediately. Our tweet on it was widely shared by the public.

FACT CHECK

Labour's extreme scenario for drugs post-Brexit

The Labour party have repeatedly claimed that under Boris Johnson's plans for a trade deal with the USA, £500 million a week could be sent to US drug companies, not the NHS.

It’s certainly possible that drug prices could increase following a trade deal as this fits with US priorities from past negotiations. But the £500 million figure is a rough calculation based on a scenario that the Nuffield Trust has said is fairly extreme.

FACT CHECK

Lib Dems's misleading leaflet falsely quotes the Guardian

We fact checked a Liberal Democrat leaflet which falsely attributes a pro-Lib Dem quote to the Guardian (it was actually said by Jo Swinson). We featured in the Guardian, saying that: “Parties and candidates should not be misrepresenting the work of independent journalists in this way. These tactics are misleading and irresponsible.”

We still need your support this election

We need to protect this campaign from the influence of false and harmful claims. Can you help?

Our supporters are helping us keep up with a fast-paced, round the clock campaign.

But there's still five weeks to go. We need your help to make sure we can not only scrutinise the most harmful claims—but call out the people who make them.

Can you help out, and show your support for a more honest and accountable election?

Have a great weekend.
