In 1986, Gamaliel was founded with the same mission we follow today: to train everyday people to participate in the social, political and environmental decisions that affect their lives.
As we celebrate our 35th anniversary in 2022, we're excited to look back on all the ways we've grown since '86 — and all the ways we plan to keep growing as we move toward our 50th anniversary in 2036.
Join in the celebration by following along at gamaliel.org/gamaliel-at-35 and on our social media accounts. Got a piece of Gamaliel history, like a photo, newsletter, or story? Share them with Gamaliel Nation at [email protected].

The Harmful Affects of PFAS: Springfield Town Hall
Faith Coalition is partnering with Sierra Club - IL Chapter, United Congregations of Metro-East and the Gamaliel Network to host a virtual town hall discussing legislation regarding the PFAS incineration ban. This past legislative session, our representatives passed a PFAS incineration ban through both houses. Unfortunately, the bill was ultimately vetoed by Governor Pritzker over language concerns. His concerns have been addressed and a new bill is being drafted. Join us in furthering the conversation and letting our elected officials know we want a PFAS incineration ban in Illinois! The Virtual Town Hall on PFAS: Springfield will take place on Thursday, January 27th,2022 from 5:30pm to 6:45pm via Zoom and Facebook live.
“We are really concerned at the Sierra Club, across the country, about this lack of real federal regulation. There are no water standards, there is no oversight over most uses, there are no limits on air or water - including the 3M site that's still in operation using PFAS chemicals in Illinois and dumping the chemicals right into the Mississippi river.” - Sonya Lunder, Senior Toxics Advisor for the Gender, Equity & Environment program
PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals”, are widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time. Many PFAS are found in water, air, soil and the blood of people and animals all over the world, because of their widespread use and their persistence in the environment. Our speakers will expand upon the danger of PFAS and how important it is to regulate its usage and incineration. We will hear from Illinois State Senator Doris Turner, Sierra Club's Senior Toxics Advisor - Sonya Lunder, State Government Representative with Sierra Club -IL Chapter - Nicole Saulsberry, and a representative from the City Water, Lights and Power department of the City of Springfield.

With the collaboration of impacted persons, Chippewa Valley Street Ministry, Affordable Housing Task Force, JONAH (Joining Our Neighbors Advancing Hope) Clergy and the City, on the eve of the longest night, we invited our entire community to join us in a Vigil for Homelessness at Phoenix Park to hold space for those who have died in the past year while living on the streets and for those who are entering the lethal winter months with no warm place to call home. We hope this will be a transformative moment when we all decide to work together to end the injustice of homelessness in Eau Claire. Currently, a group of community members and local officials have partnered to create a warming center to give the homeless a place to stay during the day.
