Yesterday, the Ohio Supreme Court struck down the blatantly gerrymandered Congressional maps in a 4-3 ruling. Now, the state legislature has 30 days to come up with a new, more just map.
In a swing state that elects both Republicans and Democrats, the idea that Congressional maps favoring Republicans in 12 out of 15 districts is an affront to the Constitution and to the people who yearn for responsible, effective governance.
Democracy itself is on the line - and the State Legislature must abide by the law of the land, put an end to partisan hackery, and deliver districts that properly represent the people and communities of Ohio.
Yesterday’s decision offers a glimmer of hope that our institutions will safeguard the will of the people, as the founders intended. I commend the Ohio Supreme Court for their ruling and cautiously await the new map from the state legislature.
Team, the Supreme Court did the right thing yesterday, but we are still in a fight against the gerrymandering and partisan schemes that threaten our democracy.
