John,
As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, I am reminded of Dr. King’s inspiring words: “If you can't fly, then run, if you can't run, then walk, if you can't walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”
You see, John, Dr. King lived his life by these words. He never stopped moving forward despite how difficult the journey; he fought, bled, and ultimately was killed fighting to create a more representative democracy — one that ensures the will and rights of every American citizen.
Since Dr. King’s murder 54 years ago, we have made meaningful progress upholding his vision for a more just America. But to this day, we are still fighting against what Dr. King himself called a “tragedy” used by “misguided senators:” THE FILIBUSTER.
The filibuster continues to prevent Congress from taking meaningful action on voting rights, gun violence, and more. In fact, rather than passing laws that the overwhelming majority of Americans support, the U.S. Senate uses the filibuster to put politics over people. Despite my frustrations, especially this weekend, I am once again reminded of Dr. King’s wise words, to push forward no matter how difficult the journey — and that’s why I’m reaching out to you today, John.
Put simply, the filibuster is killing us — and I need you to join me on this journey to end it once and for all. Fortunately, just this week, President Biden announced that he supports changes to the filibuster. We must act quickly while momentum is on our side: Will you join me in demanding the Senate end the filibuster so we can pass life-saving voting rights and gun violence prevention legislation? Thank you for taking action alongside Brady this MLK Day weekend. I know, together, we can achieve Dr. King’s vision of a representative and just democracy. We must never stop fighting. [[link removed]]
