Senators Sinema and Manchin do the right thing
... and we need to support them!

It’s great to have allies.

It’s even better to have allies who are heroes.

This week, Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin put country over party and stood up for two basic, related principles:

  1. The Senate shouldn’t change its rules and procedures in a party-line vote intended to help the interests of one party.
  2. The Senate shouldn’t change the nation’s voting laws in a party-line vote in a manner that would be seen by the other side as intending to help the interests of just that one party.

Many in the media and the critics of Sens. Sinema and Manchin like to caricature them and falsely ascribe motives to our hero-allies.

The reality is that both Senators are motivated by trying to do the most basic No Labels stuff: start the process of addressing our big challenges with two-party negotiations among well-intentioned folks from both sides.

That’s how you unite the country, that’s how you get good policy, that’s how you get buy-in across the board on new legislation in the vast center.

Here’s Senator Sinema on the floor Thursday, explaining her principled stance:

As strong as our two Senate heroes are, please don’t overlook the reality that they can always use our help.

What can you do?

* Go on social media and cheer them on.

That’s a lot from us on the filibuster and voting issues.

Those might seem like process-y, boring DC matters, but, as our two Senator friends demonstrated this week, there is a lot of real and big stuff on the line.

We aren’t going to end the madness of one-party rule and escalating partisan conflict until our political culture changes.

Change is hard.

That’s why we need heroes.

No Labeling Episode 13: The Three Cs of Election Reform
By Ryan Clancy & Me

Casting, counting, and certifying – those are the three key components of voting and elections in America. Democrats are focused on the first, and Republicans on the second – but Ryan and I make the case that it’s the certification of results that is an area of genuine potential progress in a closely divided nation.

Five Facts on Vote 'Harvesting' in the US
By No Labels

In much of the U.S., it is legal for voters to designate someone else to collect and return their ballots for them. Critics say the practice — which they call vote “harvesting” — opens the door to fraud and undermines the principle of a secret ballot, while supporters say vote collection makes it easier for more people to exercise their franchise.
