John, Americans turned out in record numbers in 2020 to reject President Trump's divisive and hateful politics and elect President Biden. Yet, following the election, we witnessed a sitting president provoke a violent coup attempt that killed two police officers in order to overturn the results and hold onto power. Thanks to the work of nonpartisan election officials, elected leaders, selfless Capitol police who put their lives on the line, and ordinary citizens who raised their voices in defense of democracy, the insurrectionists failed. But the threat to our democracy remains. Republican lawmakers have seized on Trump's Big Lie and are using his false claims as cover to introduce hundreds of voter suppression bills in state legislatures across the country. Many have already passed. That's why I unequivocally support President Biden's call for federal legislation to immediately protect voting rights. House Democrats did their job yesterday by passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. Now, the Senate must do whatever it takes to send it to the President’s desk and protect our democracy – including, if necessary, reforming the filibuster. Thank you, Keith Ellisonadd your name
