Earlier this week President Biden called on the U.S. Senate to take bold action to protect the integrity of our elections. He highlighted the new threat posed today by voter suppression and election subversion: "It's no longer about who gets to vote; it's about making it harder to vote. It’s about who gets to count the vote and whether your vote counts at all."

As I've said for some time, we can't afford to lose our democracy because of arcane Senate rules that, as applied now, depart from the original intent of majority rule. That's why I'm continuing to fight to secure our elections and find a path to end or amend the rule that allows 41 of the 100 senators to permanently block the will of the majority of the American people.

Friends, yesterday proved how important it is to elect enough Democrats who are willing to reform the rules and defend our democracy. To move forward we must protect and expand our Senate majority. Let’s remember that not a single Republican senator — NOT ONE — supports the Freedom to Vote Act. Not one supports the Build Back Better plan to reduce the costs of prescription drugs and child care, provide universal education and meet the climate crisis. Not one supported the American Rescue Plan to deploy more vaccines more rapidly and stabilize our economy.

In these midterm elections we need to protect all the Senate Democratic seats that are up this year — including right here in Maryland AND work to pick-up senate seats in states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio and North Carolina.
