More news out of Ohio -- following the recent decision to strike down the state’s legislative maps, the Ohio Supreme Court announced today that the congressional map is ALSO an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander.
The Court pointed to voters “demanding change” through a constitutional amendment following the 2011 redistricting process and said the General Assembly did not heed that call to stop partisan gerrymandering -- stating that both “statistical analysis” and “simple common sense” indicate these maps are just as bad, if not worse, partisan gerrymanders than 2011.
This is another huge win for voters in Ohio. And with 15 congressional districts, it has the potential to impact the balance of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2022 elections.
We are proud to say we supported Ohioans in this fight. But unfortunately, not every state has a partisan gerrymandering ban like Ohio. That’s one of the reasons we are fighting to advocate for the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.
If Congress passes this bill, every state will be able to challenge partisan gerrymandered maps in court! And right now, there are almost a dozen states where Republicans have proposed or passed maps that could be overturned based on the national standards for fairness set by this bill.
