Peace Walk with King Family for Voting Rights

WHEN Monday, January 17, at 9 a.m., rain or shine
WHERE Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, near 71 Potomac Ave SE, Washington, DC
20003
There can be no celebration without legislation!
[ [link removed] ]Yes! I'll Be There!

Our votes are power. That's why Republicans across the country are trying
so hard to take our freedom to vote away from us.

Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin say that they support our right to
vote, but are still unwilling to remove the one barrier in the U.S. Senate
preventing voting rights legislation. This weekend, we need to get loud
and demonstrate that across the country the vast majority of people demand
that they change the Senate rules in order to protect and expand our right
to vote.

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, please join Martin Luther King III,
Arndrea Waters King, and Yolanda Renee King in honoring their family’s
legacy and that of civil rights leaders by advocating for legislative
action on voting rights NOW.

Join to make it clear to our elected leaders that there will be no
celebration without legislation.

There is no more time to wait. The Senate is expected to vote on Tuesday,
so this is our last chance to ensure all senators hear our call. The march
will proceed in the event of snow or rain.

Please wear masks and comfortable shoes—we will be marching!

Participants are committed to continuing this strong tradition started
more than 40 years ago by radio talk show host and community activist
Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene, Washington Informer publisher and
philanthropist Dr. Calvin W. Rolark, and former Ward 8 Councilmember
Wilhelmina J. Rolark when they organized the annual Martin Luther King Day
Parade (on one of the nation’s first streets named in honor of the civil
rights leader, following his death in 1968). The parade began in 1979, six
years before Dr. Kings's birthday became a federal holiday. We continue
the tradition and celebration that the Rolarks and Petey Greene started as
we honor Dr. King and keep his message alive.

We are committed to maintaining public health measures to practice safe
protesting during the pandemic. All event participants are expected to
wear a mask, maintain social distancing, have weighed their own risk in
attending, and follow all local safety guidelines. Individual hosts are
responsible for compliance with their own local laws and event
requirements (including orders limiting the sizes of events).
Additionally, a core principle shared by supporting organizations is a
commitment to nonviolent, peaceful actions. MoveOn is committed to the
principle of nonviolence. MoveOn does not condone, support, or facilitate
any form of violence, and it does not and will not affiliate itself with
any group or person seeking to do violence. All actions sponsored or
organized on this page are intended to be nonviolent and peaceful. We
expect all participants to act lawfully at all times and to seek to
de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our
values.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Together, our diverse and vibrant coalition
elected Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. We have an opportunity to make
progress, but only if we give it our all to call for bold progressive
legislation to expand health care, solve the climate crisis, address
systemic racism, and more. Will you chip in now to power our work?

[ [link removed] ]Yes, I'll chip in $5 a month.

[ [link removed] ]No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
