Hey John,
MLK Day marks Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s deadline to unrig the rules of democracy so that our elected officials can finally deliver for voting rights (1). That means progressive lawmakers intend to begin working to reform the filibuster in order to clear a path forward for this critical voting rights bill.
The House just passed the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, important legislation to protect free and fair elections and combat against voter suppression. Now is the time for our Senators to show us which side they are on. Each senator can come down on the side of the American people or they can come down on the side of the anti-voter laws silencing the voices of Americans across the country. Failure to deliver voting rights legislation to the American people will put senators on the wrong side of history.
That’s why this year for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we’re joining more than 150 organizations and the King family to honor Dr. King’s legacy by advocating for legislative voting rights action now.
