John, This week, President Biden traveled to Atlanta to speak about the ongoing voting rights battle in Congress, highlighting the dire state of our democracy: “I believe that the threat to our democracy is so grave that we must find a way to pass [the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act],” he told the crowd. “And if that bare minimum is blocked, we have no option but to change the Senate rules, including getting rid of the filibuster for this.” Sign if you agree: It’s time the Senate does everything it can urgently to protect our freedom to vote by carving out the filibuster and passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. State legislators across the country are systematically chipping away at voting rights which took decades to establish. The clear and immediate remedy is passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. But as long as the filibuster exists, the chances of passing this landmark bill are dwindling by the day. This “Jim Crow relic,” as former President Obama has rightly called it, is being used to block overwhelmingly popular legislation and stifle the will of the voters. Last October, the Senate carved out the filibuster in order to adjust the debt ceiling in the face of an economic crisis. Now, as we face a crisis of our democracy, our Senators must take the same bold action. Tell the Senate: Carve out the filibuster and protect our right to vote. In solidarity, Free Speech For People |
