This means being able to access life-saving, critical care. We are going to win, and win in community!

“Today we are celebrating,” said Dulce Garcia, chair of San Diego Immigrants’ Rights Consortium. “We know this is not only an acknowledgment of our presence but our great contributions to California.”
In a $286.4 billion budget proposal outlined Monday, Newsom highlighted free health care for all immigrants as a top priority.

PROGRAM UPDATES:

New Year’s weekend gave our team one last chance to clean up the desert, as well as a fresh start to our work in 2022.

On December 31, a group of five team members cleaned up 505 pounds. of trash from our public lands/wilderness! A few of the items we removed were clothing and water bottles left behind by those crossing through on their journey. Most of the trash we cleaned up and hauled away was shooting targets, bullet casings, heavy metal objects, and broken beer bottles.

Friday’s total of 505 pounds took our 2021 total weight of trash removed from public lands/wilderness to a total of 2,545 pounds!!! For scale, 2,545 pounds is roughly half the weight of a Jeep Gladiator truck 🤯 .
Sunday, our Water Drop directors went to survey a heavily travelled route, to monitor these drop sites for replenishing needs. While scouting, our program directors were able to clean up an additional 20 pounds of trash, starting 2022 off right.

Right on time for the holidays, we hit our goal of helping free 100 people from detention through our Familias Reunidas Program! Today we want to introduce you to our 100th bond recipient: Fernanda. She is an asylum seeker from Colombia who spent 3 months at the Imperial Regional Detention Center. We also want to share this heartfelt message on her behalf:

"Good afternoon, my name is Fernanda, I want to thank you with my soul for the great support that Border Angels gave me by posting my bond. May God bless you greatly and continue supporting us migrants who come to this country to seek a better future, and in my case a refuge. I want to ask you very respectfully to continue helping the foundation so that they help many people who need the support. Sending a huge hug! ❤️ 😘 "

We are kicking off 2022 by adding three new cases to our Green Cards for Kids program. We have been able to take on more cases now that we have a second attorney for this program and are looking forward to starting Special Immigrant Juvenile Status proceedings with the hopes of securing legal permanent residency for these kids.

Return of the Caravan of Love:
Our first and only Caravan of Love this year took place Wednesday, December 22nd, just in time for the holiday season! After almost two years of strict remote support to the El Chaparral encampment and shelter network in Tijuana, it was amazing to safely receive volunteers and donations in kind!

We were able to visit Movimiento Juventud 2000, a shelter housing migrant families, and bring many items like this generous donation of Jansport backpacks! Thank you to our volunteers for participating.

A VISIT FROM COUNCILWOMAN MONICA RODRIGUEZ!
We're starting the year ensuring we continue our work alongside Unified U.S Deported Veterans! We met with L.A. District 7 Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez alongside Robert Vivar, and Ian Seruelo APALA, after which the councilwoman visited Tijuana to offer her support in furthering the awareness and support for repatriation of our Deported Veterans.

This issue is very dear to Councilwoman Rodriguez, as her father a green card USMC, VietNam combat Veteran, and someone who could have very well been one the men she met on her visit. The councilwoman offered her first support and we look forward to working alongside her and her team to "Leave No One Behind."

Border Patrol tallies record 557 migrant deaths on US-Mexico border in 2021 fiscal year

The devastating report shows lives lost in the desert have more than doubled from last fiscal’s year report of 254 deaths. “Border Patrol reports data on deaths where agents find the body or are involved in an emergency response.” While 557 are confirmed, this does not account for all of those who are not found in the desert, and does not include maritime deaths.

These findings confirm the need for our important and life-saving work in the desert. Our dedicated Water Drop team was in the desert every weekend this past year, and this year will likely be the same. We thank them for their incredible efforts, and as always remain committed to education and advocacy on our southern border. It is our hope and mission that continuing to organize against the many racist and harmful policies affecting migrants for decades, alongside our humanitarian efforts, will save lives and reform immigration policies.

Immigrants receive their release from ICE on Christmas:

One day before the 24th, two people detained for months were released; This brought our total of bonds posted to 101! Hitting our goal of helping free 100 people from detention, just in time for the holidays.

"The truth is, it feels horrible to have a relative in immigration detention just for not having money to pay the high amounts requested by the government," said the lawyer, who personally experienced the same situation with the arrest of one of her brothers.

Blankets and socks that save migrants:

Often migrants who try to reach the United States by crossing the border through the mountains of California, find warm clothing in their wake precisely when they are at the mercy of the cold or on the verge of freezing due to the low temperatures of this wintertime.

"We know this because occasionally they send us messages in which they tell us that they found the warm clothes," Dulce García, executive director of the organization Border Angels.
