Promoting Locally-Grounded Development Research

More needs to be done to expand the engagement of researchers from low- and middle-income countries in development research. In partnership with the African School of Economics (ASE), the University of Nairobi, and the Université Norbert Zongo, last December IPA hosted a virtual workshop to share experiences and learnings to promote locally-grounded research. The event brought together people from various universities, research and policy institutions, and funding organizations.

What Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) mean depends heavily on the local context. After an assessment of our offices in Peru, we learned that most of our staff come from private universities that offer the research training needed for the jobs, but also serve higher-income students. We have taken three low-cost measures that have enabled us to increase the proportion of public universities' staff to 51 percent.
