here is what is happening in the fight to secure our elections, protect the right to vote, and defend our democracy:
Yesterday, the House voted on a bill that combines the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
We sent it over to the Senate using a legislative maneuver (I will not bore you with the details) that ensures that the Senate will actually be forced to debate it, rather than allowing obstructionists to filibuster even starting the debate.
Of course, the filibuster can still be used to block the vote. I am hopeful that when push comes to shove, the Senate will change its rules and finally allow a basic majority-rules up-or-down vote on this crucial legislation.
In addition to ending partisan gerrymandering, disclosing dark money, expanding opportunities to vote, and restoring voting rights protections, this bill will ensure that our votes are counted accurately.
As President Biden said, "It's about election subversion, not just whether or not people get to vote. Who counts the vote? That's what this is about, that's what makes this so different from anything else we've ever done."
We have to get this done. And if it does not get done this weekend, I am going to keep up the fight to get it done "as long as I have a breath in me", as President Biden said.
