Dear John, The connection between our freedom to vote for our government and the freedom of our markets and our economy couldn’t be clearer. That’s why the American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) has actively advocated for passage of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The House has passed a bill that combined those two voting rights bills. This new measure now moves to the Senate, which is expected to take up the bill on Tuesday. We need business leaders to demonstrate their support NOW for protecting our freedom to vote, to prevent the silencing of some American voices, especially women and people of color, and to preserve our democracy. Twice last year, Senate filibuster rules were used to block even beginning debate on these measures. That is why ASBN also supports reforming those rules, a move that Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) has promised to bring to the full Senate if filibuster rules are used again to block these measures. As representatives of the business community, we must urge the Senate to pass the voting rights bill and act to reform Senate filibuster rules in order to do so, and we must do so TODAY.
