Dear Friend,

At a time when states like Texas are busy finding ways to restrict voting access, I am proud to have helped pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. The right to vote is the most fundamental aspect of our Republic and as a former voting rights attorney, I have been working every day in Congress to safeguard our democracy.

Passing the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act is a critical step in the right direction toward repairing the deep political divide in our nation and restoring trust in our electoral system. The bill expands voting access by creating national standards around early voting and vote by mail, ends partisan gerrymandering and reforms our broken campaign finance system.

The bill also includes provisions from two pieces of my legislation, the Preventing Election Subversion Act and Protecting Election Administration from Interference Act. These bills would ensure the integrity of elections, protect vote-counting from partisan interference and improve federal protections for election workers.

The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act is now headed back to the Senate. The House has acted repeatedly to protect and expand voting rights, and now with the passage of this bill, I again call on the Senate to find a way to get this done.

This shouldn’t be a partisan issue, but sadly, without any Republican support in the Senate, Democrats have no choice but to act alone. We cannot allow the filibuster to get in the way of the work we need to do to protect our democracy.

I will continue to fight for every Texans’ right to vote. It is an honor to serve North Texas, where I was born and raised.

Sincerely,
