John,
On Monday, the country honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his powerful work to advance civil rights, economic justice, and so much more.
The most meaningful way we can honor Dr. King is to take action on landmark legislation to protect the freedom to vote and to end the rigging of our democracy. All of us are sick of gerrymandering; of the way the wealthy and the lobbyists dominate policymaking; of the efforts to make it harder for certain people to vote; and of the attempts to sabotage elections through partisan gamesmanship.
The rigging of the system affects us all, but it disproportionately affects communities of color, it deepens inequality, and it corrodes Congress’ ability to solve problems on behalf of the common good.
We’re living through a defining moment in the history of not just America, but of democracy itself. Authoritarian forces are on the march all over the world. We must stand up to them and their assaults on our institutions. The most effective way to do so is to pass laws that strengthen those institutions and empower the voices of everyday Americans. That’s why Congress needs to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.
Let’s carry on Dr. King’s legacy. Call your senators today at (202) 224-3121 and tell them to pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act.
