Dear John,
The filibuster continues to stand in the way of critical legislation to ensure access to vote. Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer (D-NY), has promised to act on voting rights reform by Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and has committed to do whatever is necessary to change the Senate rules to protect our democracy.
We must call on our Senators to pass the critical voting rights legislation our democracy needs.
Make no mistake: voter suppression is a public health issue. Every aspect of our health is affected by the world around us, and voting is a powerful tool allowing people to impact their environment, protect their rights, ensure the dignity of their communities, and control their bodies.
State legislatures across the country have continued to attack our freedom to vote, and it is the very same state legislatures attacking voting rights that are restricting access to critical reproductive health care, including abortion care. The intent of these laws is clear: to disenfranchise and harm those already facing the most barriers to care.
We need you with us. That’s why this weekend, we are joining Martin Luther King III, Andrea Waters King, and Yolanda Renee King to advocate for legislative voting rights actions right now. Sign Martin Luther King III’s petition with MoveOn and call your Senators to urge them to protect our democracy.
Thank you for taking action to protect voting rights.
Sincerely,
MiQuel Davies, JD (she/her)
Assistant Director, Public Policy
