Dear Friend,
It's no exaggeration to say our democracy is under attack across the country. Voting rights are being restricted by hundreds of voter suppression bills that GOP legislators have passed in recent months. These laws are intentionally designed to make it much more difficult for young people, new voters, and people of color to exercise their democratic right.
You've seen the news — some laws prohibit election volunteers from giving water to people waiting in line at the polls; others measures eliminate drop boxes in predominantly African American districts; and still more will roll back early voting and vote-by-mail options even though millions of Americans have cast their votes this way for years.
We know what this is really about: restoring Jim Crow in order to preserve the white power structure and ensure right-wing electoral wins.
We can't let these new voter suppression laws stand. We need Congress to respond to these attacks on democracy and honor the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. by passing the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. We don't have time to waste.
Please, call your Senators now and tell them to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. [[link removed]]
If you're in the DC area, consider traveling into the city this Monday for a march across the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge [[link removed]] to honor Dr. King and demand action on federal voting rights legislation.
Thank you, and may the words and actions of Martin Luther King Jr. continue to inspire and guide us.
In Solidarity,
