Friend,
Just now, I announced a $1.85 billion nationwide settlement with Navient – one of the largest student loan servicers in the country – over their unfair and deceptive practices. Today’s settlement requires Navient to fix their mistakes and provides millions of dollars in relief for Massachusetts families.
Instead of following through on their promises to help financially-burdened borrowers find an affordable path out of student debt, Navient steered them into forbearances that added millions more to their loans. They also allegedly provided subprime private loans to students attending for-profit schools and colleges with low graduation rates, even though they knew that it was unlikely the borrowers would be able to repay them.
You can learn more about the settlement and what it might mean for you here. Massachusetts-specific information is available here.
I’ve met too many people who simply wanted to get a good education, but instead had their financial futures ruined at the hands of student loan servicers like Navient. While this settlement is a major victory for families who have been harmed by these practices and will implement significant reforms to prevent it from happening again, it’s clear that our student loan repayment system is broken.
You can rest assured that, as the People’s Lawyer, I’m going to continue to hold student loan providers accountable to the people and advocate for meaningful reform. You can help me by reading and sharing this article about the Navient settlement so that others know how the People’s Law Firm is standing up for them.
Thanks for all you do, |
