As the Senate deliberates whether to reform Senate rules to pass vital voting rights protections, this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, thousands will be taking part in “no celebration without legislation” demonstrations to show their support for legislation that would protect and strengthen our sacred right to vote in the face of Republican attacks.
The Senate has a historic opportunity, right now, to reverse the tide of voter suppression laws that has swept through at least 19 state legislatures across the country.
Fueled by conspiracy theories and outright lies about the 2020 election, far-right Republican lawmakers have made it their singular goal to make voting more difficult in order to stay in power. Failure to meet this moment with the attention and energy necessary could imperil our democracy and spell disaster for the midterm and 2024 elections.
I can think of no better way to honor the legacy of Dr. King this year than by participating in these demonstrations and calling on the Senate to pass legislation that would protect one of our most sacred rights.
