As a result of pressure from grassroots organizations, individuals sharing their stories, and our movement, President Biden announced another extension delaying all federal student loan payments until May.
This win is another signal of what we already know: President Biden has the power to end the student loan debt crisis permanently by canceling all federal student debt with the stroke of his pen.
And we will not let up on the pressure until Biden uses his executive authority to finally remove this economic burden off the shoulders of millions of working people and their families for good. 2022 can be the year this crisis ends.
Alexandria has made student debt a key priority – she shared her own student debt story on the House floor, has repeatedly called on Biden to use his executive authority to cancel student debt, and co-sponsored the resolution with Sen. Warren and other colleagues to cancel up to $50,000 in federal student loan debt for borrowers.1
Last year, we asked you to share your stories of how student loan debt impacts you and your families. The stories we received were heartbreaking reminders of the cruel and painful burden of student loans.
We have seen the benefits that student loan cancellation can have since the emergency COVID-19 forbearance went into effect almost two years ago. The forbearance has given people the breathing room to take care of their families and to start investing in their futures.
No person should have to go into lifelong debt in order to get an education. It’s wrong. It’s backwards. And, it doesn’t help us as a country.
