Sometimes, change happens so slowly — not even inch by inch, but millimeter by millimeter — that it barely feels like it’s happening at all.

But when you look back, you realize that you’re not in the same place you used to be. You’ve moved forward. You’ve made progress.

Take this week, when President Biden and Vice President Harris endorsed changing the filibuster so it can’t block legislation to protect the right to vote and the right to have that vote counted.

A few years ago, when we were talking about the filibuster, it wasn’t on a whole lot of people’s radar, and reform didn’t have a ton of support in the Senate.

But we kept making the case. More and more senators joined in. Today, almost all of my Democratic colleagues agree that we’ve got to do something about the filibuster. And the Biden-Harris administration is jumping into this fight.

Our toes are on the line to make this happen. But we must keep speaking out.

Add your name if you agree: The Senate should change the filibuster rules so the Republican minority can’t stop us from passing voting rights legislation.

Now, you know me: I’m ready to flat-out get rid of the filibuster on every issue, all the way down the line. The American people elected Democrats to have a Senate majority so we could get things done, not so we could hand Mitch McConnell veto power over gun safety, immigration reform, and a $15 minimum wage.

But right now, we’ve got a chance to make sure the filibuster doesn’t block the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.

And for the sake of the survival of our democracy, we must seize it.

Across the country, Republican state legislatures — with simple-majority votes, in chambers that don’t have filibusters — have been restricting the right to vote. It is a threat to free and fair elections, and a threat to our democracy.

The Senate filibuster means that Congress can’t protect voting rights unless GOP politicians agree, all while their party is actively undermining our democracy in state after state.

But if we get around the filibuster, we can roll back those voter suppression laws. We can ban partisan gerrymandering. We can fight dark money in politics. And we can make sure the American people get to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

Let's make this happen. Add your name to say that the Senate must protect the right to vote and the right to have that vote counted, even if it means getting around the filibuster.

Thanks for being a part of this,

Elizabeth
