The nation’s emissions fell over 10 percent in 2020, but the 2021 increase now puts the Biden administration’s goal for 2030 at risk.

John,

President Biden and his administration have set the goal of slashing America’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.

The administration’s goal is in line with scientific recommendations. This is the level of global ambition required to keep the Earth from warming over 1.5 degrees Celsius, minimizing the risk of catastrophic effects.

But the data shows that in 2021, rather than emissions decreasing, they ticked up instead.

According to a new report from the Rhodium Group, America’s greenhouse gas emissions rose 6.2 percent in 2021, a result of the economy recovering from pandemic lows and coal plants significantly boosting production. This additional accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere contributed to making 2021 the fifth hottest year on record.

The nation’s emissions fell over 10 percent in 2020, but the 2021 increase now puts the Biden administration’s goal for 2030 at risk.

According to the Rhodium Group report, America’s greenhouse gas emissions are currently only 17.4 percent below 2005 levels. This means the U.S. is falling far short of hitting the Biden administration's climate goals unless Congress passes significant new laws to speed up the switch to solar, wind, and other clean energy options.

By filing an amicus brief in this case, Congressional Republicans are hoping to influence the ultimate decision by conservative justices. It’s a blatant effort to urge the conservative justices to rule in favor of power plants, rather than asking them to consider the wider implications for the health and safety of the American people.

John, SEEC members of Congress are leading the fight to switch our country to green energy by passing climate policies that can get us to our 2030 goal.

We’re at a pivotal moment in our national and global fight to curb climate change. Will you pitch in immediately to show your support for SEEC members as they work to help America avoid this looming crisis?
