Friend, In a brazen display of racial gerrymandering, the Georgia Legislature has drawn three congressional districts in a way that unlawfully diminishes the voting power of people of color and violates the Constitution. So, we’re suing. Last week, we filed a lawsuit charging that the newly drawn maps for Georgia’s 6th, 13th and 14th congressional districts are the latest examples in a long history of using racial discrimination to maintain political power in the state. The suit also draws attention to the fact that the federal government continually must step in to ensure that the congressional map allocates political power in a way that does not violate federal law or the Constitution. “The Georgia Legislature has ‘cracked’ and ‘packed’ communities of color in the congressional districts map, denying voters of color an equal voice in elections,” said Jack Genberg, senior staff attorney for the SPLC’s Voting Rights Practice Group. “This map must be remedied to prevent harm to Georgia’s communities of color for years to come. These unlawful districts would diminish communities’ ability to advocate for fair treatment and the fair allocation of funds from their government.” Our case was brought on behalf of Common Cause, the League of Women Voters of Georgia and individual Georgians. We are representing the plaintiffs in partnership with Dechert LLP. You can learn more about the case here or read the full complaint here. In solidarity, Your friends at the Southern Poverty Law Center
