Dear John,

This week, Governor Gavin Newsom released his 2022-23 budget proposal, and it advances the Administration’s commitment to housing and homelessness as one of the most critical issues facing Californians. Read NPH’s full analysis.

Yet much deeper investments will be needed to fully address the long-term needs of our communities in the Bay Area and throughout California.

And we have the resources to go deeper. According to Governor Newsom, California has a $45.7 billion state budget surplus this year.

With the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 in our communities, we must make sure the Bay Area is resilient enough to face the future. This means prioritizing big, bold housing investments that are ongoing and at scale to meet the needs of the Bay Area.

NPH Policy Director Abram Diaz shares his most important takeaway on the Governor’s state budget proposal

What’s in the Budget: The budget includes investments to help address affordable housing and homelessness, and ties climate goals to housing. See the summary of key budget items related to housing and homelessness solutions in our analysis.

What's Next: Looking ahead, NPH will work with our partners and allies in making sure that deeper affordable housing investments make it into the May Revise of the budget.

We especially would like to see the budget reflect California’s Roadmap Home 2030, which emphasizes the need for sustained investments at the scale that meets our housing challenges.

In particular, we’ll be advocating for the inclusion of investments for more affordable housing development; more permanent supportive housing and affordable homes for extremely low-income families and individuals; and ongoing homelessness prevention programs.
