Welcome to Thursday, January 13th, gloves and mittens…

Leaders of five countries with the world’s largest nuclear arsenals released a joint statement to “affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.”

The U.S., the People’s Republic of China, Russia, Great Britain, and France were represented in the statement, which addressed their collective desire to reduce strategic risks stemming from nuclear weapons. The joint statement explained:

“We affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought. As nuclear use would have far-reaching consequences, we also affirm that nuclear weapons ― for as long as they continue to exist ― should serve defensive purposes, deter aggression, and prevent war. We believe strongly that the further spread of such weapons must be prevented.”

Three other countries with declared nuclear weapons arsenals ― India, Pakistan, and North Korea ― didn’t join the statement.

California Law Requires Retailers to Have Gender-Neutral Product Displays

The bill makes California the first state to require large retailers to include a gender-neutral section for products like toys and toothbrushes as part of a larger movement to end bias and stereotypes about gender.

AB 1084 applies to stores with over 500 employees and is limited to toys, teething, and hygiene products. It does not outlaw boys and girls sections. Gendered sections may continue to exist, but large retailers need to include a gender-neutral section as well.

Assemblyman and co-author of the bill, Evan Low, told NBC News:

“We need to stop stigmatizing what’s acceptable for certain genders and just let kids be kids,"...“My hope is this bill encourages more businesses across California and the U.S. to avoid reinforcing harmful and outdated stereotypes.”
